She joined her parents and two siblings, Kay and Robert Gile, at their home in Provo, Utah. A year later, they were joined by baby Sheila, and six years later, little brother Jay completed the family. She attended Grandview Elementary School, Dixon Junior High School, and Provo High School, from which she graduated in 1967. She was a talented musician and was first-chair flautist throughout high school. While in high school, she spent her summers in Montrose, CO, with her paternal grandmother, Elsie M. Selleck. (The step-daughter of Homer Hastings, Jr. Sue’s father, Cliff, was born and raised on Hastings Mesa.) After graduation, Sue moved to Montrose where she worked in the hospital Purchasing Dept. for eight years.
In Nov., 1967, she married Richard A. Tofflemoyer, with whom she had two sons, Bill and Luke Tofflemoyer. Later they divorced. In March, 1986, she married Raymond E. Zielke, who brought along his two sons, “Little Ray” and Rob Zielke. Sue loved being a part of the “Zielke Clan,” and was welcomed to it with open arms.
They had moved to Childress, TX, where Ray was employed and kept busy as a diesel mechanic. Sue was employed as Assistant Business Manager at the Childress Regional Hospital for the next 15 years. As Ray was growing weary of working nearly 24/7 taking care of the numerous trucks who broke down in that area, they decided to move to Larned, KS, to be near his family in Dodge City and Larned. There Sue worked in the Public Utilities Office until back problems made it necessary to retire in mid-2000.
Sue was a great cook and loved to bake – pies and cinnamon rolls were her specialty. When the boys were young, the family enjoyed fishing and camping. Her hobbies were her “grandchildren,” quilting and puzzles.
