I am sad to share that my dad, Rick Purdy, passed away on February 7th, on Brett’s birthday. I choose to believe that one of the happiest days of my dad’s life was 58 years ago, when his son was born — and that Brett welcomed him home this weekend, where he is now at peace with Molly.
Many of you knew him as a proud Bruin and lifelong football fan. He played fullback at UCLA from 1966–1968 and later spent more than 30 years working with UCLA Athletics and Development — something he was incredibly proud of.
More than anything, he loved his family. He loved traveling, golfing, tanning, and being “Gpa” to his granddaughter. He and Molly moved to Montrose so they could be close to Emma, and he was there for every birthday, ballet recital, and special moment.
He was the best dad, friend, husband, brother, and son — full of energy, love, and life. After a long and difficult battle with dementia, I find peace knowing he is finally resting, surrounded by loved ones — especially Brett and Molly.
We hope to celebrate his life with an informal toast in Montrose, and a more formal service in California in the next few months, where he will be laid to rest at Forest Lawn next to his son.
Thank you to everyone who has loved and supported him — and us — through the years.
