Rex was a gifted and blessed man. Gifted with the ability to make small talk and engage people he had never met; no one was a stranger for long. He was blessed to have had a wonderful life with Denise for 31 years. Together their blended family included 5 children: Mark, Paul, Nancy, Curt and Brian. With spousal support from Mandy, Christine, Kristin and Mike, 21 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren were added; over time, came many extended family members and friends.
Born in Sidney, NE and establishing himself as an Eagle Scout, Rex demonstrated leadership reflective of the Scout Spirit. Scouting changed the course of his life and fueled his passion and commitment to community service. The skills he learned as a scout, he applied to every challenge he faced with conviction and faith.
Being a Cabela model in 1978, taught him salesmanship, which served him well as a radio and television sales manager for many years. His roots to Nebraska ran deep as a dedicated and loyal fan of the Nebraska Cornhuskers. In 1997, Denise and Rex planted new roots in Montrose and found a community they “fell in love with”. In 2016, Rex served as Mayor and on Montrose City Council. He was the face of “Neighborhood Watch” and instrumental in the formation of MPR (Montrose Prepared Response). His volunteer contributions included the San Juan Coloradans for NE and numerous local non-profit organizations. He was a member of the Montrose Elks, Masonic, Scottish Rite and Shrine.
Rex carried himself well on the golf course. He and Denise supported and participated in many fundraising golf events together. Rex loved telling stories and jokes, playing cards with family and friends and painting golf balls that rolled into his yard. He gave away hundreds of red ladybug golf balls as a token of friendship. Rex was loud and proud to be of service to the Montrose Community. Though his voice is now silent, his legacy will be how he showed up. Always with a smile and a handshake, saying “Thank you for coming. I appreciate what you do.” His absence will be felt.
Funeral service will be on Thursday, Sept 24th 11:00am at the Montrose Christian Church, 2351 Sunnyside Rd. Visitation 9-11am. Burial service at Grand View Cemetery, 16300 6450 Ct, Montrose. Service arrangements by Crippin Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, monetary donations will be used to help fund a community park bench in his honor.
