Kent Alan Schultz, 77, of Montrose, Colorado, passed away peacefully at home with his family by his side.
Born on December 27, 1947, in Grand Junction, Colorado, to Alfons Schultz and Vera Hermann, Kent spent his early years in Grand Junction, Colorado, where he attended Grand Junction High School. He went on to pursue higher education at the University of Northern Colorado and Colorado State University, earning both a Bachelor of Science and a Master’s degree.
Kent dedicated his life to education, working for many years as a special education teacher in Sandpoint, Idaho. He was also deeply committed to social justice, actively participating in the Peace Movement, leading within the Teacher's Union, and managing state and local political campaigns for candidates in the democratic party.
On June 15, 1968, Kent married his high school sweetheart, Julia Fay Schultz, in Grand Junction. Together they raised their family in Sandpoint, Idaho, where they enjoyed family camping trips, fishing, hiking and traveling. Julie preceded Kent in death in 2009.
Beyond his professional achievements, Kent found great joy in cooking, reading, fishing, camping, gardening, and teaching his grandchildren. His presence was a steady source of wisdom, humor, and warmth for those fortunate enough to know him.
Kent is survived by his four children: Richard Seals of Buckeye, Arizona; Adam Schultz of Fort Worth, Texas; Matthew Schultz of New York City, New York; and Rachel Arrechea of Montrose, Colorado. He is also survived by his brother, Tommy Schultz, and Kay Coulson of Colorado. Kent's legacy continues through his nine beloved grandchildren—Grace, Justin, Hayden, Blake, Nicole, Peter, Tyler, Alonso, and Alejandro—and his two great-grandchildren, Stevie and Emery.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Alfons and Vera; his brother, Gary; and his wife, Julie.
A memorial service honoring Kent’s life will be held on the afternoon of September 13, 2025, at the Living Word Lutheran Church in Montrose, Colorado. All who knew and loved Kent are welcome to attend and celebrate his remarkable life.
