Jonathan Wright Sapp

29 November 1971 – 21 April 2022

Jonathan Wright Sapp (Jon), 50, passed away in Norwood, Colorado, on 21 April 2022.  Jon, the son of Colonel Edwin G. Sapp (USAF, Ret) and the former Ellagene Johnson, was born in Washington, D.C., raised in Bowie, Maryland, and has lived in Norwood for the past two decades, where he was a well-known and beloved contractor who touched the lives of many through his extensive community service.

Mountain biking was a passion for Jon.  An avid cyclist whose proficiency on a unicycle awed generations and caught the attention of the Weather Channel with a nationally televised film of his mountain biking on a non-coasting unicycle, Jon “adopted” local youth, stray dogs, various wild animals, and friends with equal enthusiasm and kindness.

He taught the local youth how to master unicycles, obtained, restored, and provided bicycles for many, rallied the neighborhood to build a monster BMX track, and was a frequent donator to the Norwood Community Swap Box.

He began his carpentry career restoring centuries-old homes on the Historic Homes Registry in Annapolis, Maryland, learning the restoration process with both modern and centuries-old tools.  Operating from Norwood, he contributed to the physical growth of the community (and surrounding areas) by adding entire extensions to existing homes.  He included automotive repair, somewhat to the extreme, to his repertoire, when he replaced the entire top of his truck from the windowsills up after a tree fell on it during a violent storm while he was returning from a job.

In recent years, he embellished his exceptional carpentry skill by teaching himself cabinetry.  When not on a scaffold or a ladder, Jon could be found with his friends and the youth of the neighborhood, happily motoring the waters of nearby lakes, or landing another fish for supper.

An Eagle Scout, Jon lived the Scout Law in all facets of his life.  He loved the outdoors, creating new adventures in dwelling for clients, and helping the youth around him grow in self-confidence and skill.

Survived by his parents of Owings, Maryland, brothers Michael of Edgewater, Maryland, Christopher of Lexington Park, Maryland, and sisters Libby Knapp of Las Cruces, New Mexico, Lori Adams of Aravada, Colorado, Suzanne Dammeyer of Edgewater, and Holly Hitchcock of North Beach, Maryland, as well as 22 nieces and nephews and five great-nieces and nephews, and predeceased by his brother David, of Centerville, Utah.  Jon also is survived by Katie Sapp of Telluride, his wife from 2002 to 2020, as well as many dear friends in Colorado and beyond.

A memorial service is being planned for early May in Norwood.
