He began his career in the US Marines and went on to become a Fireman in Houston. He met his wife, Glenda White, while working as an EMT in Houston. They were married in 1984. He served his community in many aspects: President of FORS (Friends of Ridgway State Park); Vice-President of OCRA (Ouray County Rodeo Association), Volunteer at the Ridgway Visitors Center, Volunteer on the Ridgway Fire Department and Grand Marshall of the Ouray County Rodeo.
