Robert Edsel Wood

Aug. 28, 1924 — Oct. 27, 2010

 

MONTROSE — Robert Edsel Wood, age 86, of Montrose, passed away Oct. 27, 2010, at his home. Robert was born Aug. 28, 1924 to Louis and Ruth (Stebbins) Wood at Richmond, Mo. He spent his childhood and graduated from high school in Anderson, Ind. Robert married Sarah L. Decker in Anderson, Ind., and she preceded him in death in January 1992. He had previously been married to Julia Van Dyke, and she preceded him in death in October 2001. Robert was retired from the United States Air Force and the Department of Defense. In 1946, he was drafted into the Army Air Force, then in 1966, he was (R.O.A.A.)  Retired Officer of the Army Air Force and C.W.O.(W4) Retired. Robert was a member of the B.P.O.E. Elks, A.A.R.P. and was a member of the United Methodist Church when he resided in California and Virginia. He attended the Hillcrest Congregational United Church of Christ in Montrose. Robert was an avid sports fan, a volunteer at the Pavilion in Montrose and with A.A.R.P.  He was known by his family as a positive and motivating father who was filled with so much life.

Surviving family members include his children, John D. Wood of Roanoke, Va., Carolyn W. Stiltner of Ridgway, Colo. and Janet W. Lewis of of Yorktown, Va.; a brother, Frank Wood of Anderson, Ind.; grandchildren, Catherine Hogge, Robert Hatton, Douglas Morgan, Alfonso Wood, Andrew Stiltner and Kimberly Bradley.  Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the American Red Cross in memory of Robert Wood. A memorial service, in memory of Robert, was held at 3 p.m. Monday, Nov. 1, 2010, at the Hillcrest Congregational United Church of Christ.
