Floyd ‘Wayne’ Wilson
Aug. 29, 1926 — March 2, 2011
MONTROSE — Long-time Montrose resident, Floyd Wayne Wilson Sr., passed away Wednesday, March 2, 2011, at the Hospice of Northern Colorado, Greeley, Colo. Wayne had moved to Milliken, Colo. recently to live with his son, Don and his family. He declined over the last few months and suffered from congestive heart failure. Wayne was born Aug. 29, 1926, to Clifford Orlando and Emily Elizabeth (Scott) Wilson in McCook, Neb. Following his junior year of high school, Wayne moved with his family to Montrose, where they made their home and where he met Emma Louise Armstrong. Following graduation from Montrose High School in 1944, Wayne and Emma Louise were married on June 18. To this union of Wayne and Emma Louise were born five children: Floyd Wilson, Jr. of Montrose, Diana Wilson (deceased), Harold Wilson of Derby, Kan., Don Wilson of Milliken, Colo. and Barbara Moore of Joplin, Mo. Wayne and Emma Louise were married for 63 years.
Wayne was preceded in death by Emma Louise after a long illness; their daughter, Diana; his parents, Clifford and “Liz” Wilson; brother and sister-in-law, Alan and Marie Wilson; sister and brother-in-law, Wilma (Wilson) and Lloyd Ridgeway; and sister and brother-in-law, Virginia (Wilson) Arnold Gohl.
Surviving family members include his son, Floyd, of Montrose; son, Harold and his wife, Diane, of Derby, Kan. and their daughters, Candace and Chelsea and her husband, Rob Walker; son, Don and his wife, Laura, of Milliken, Colo. and their five children: Nicole, Brandon, Hilary, Nathan and Zachary; and daughter, Barbara and her husband, Mark, of Joplin, Mo. and their children: Joshua and Megan and her husband, Jordan Howerton. Also surviving are Diana’s daughter, Jennifer and her husband, John Levengood, and their sons, Jakob and Tobias of Cheyenne, Wyo.
Wayne, who never met a stranger, could be seen talking to the person at the next gas pump or the check out clerk at the grocery store. He had the ability and desire to befriend anyone with whom he came in contact. After graduation from Montrose High, Wayne enlisted in the Air Force and served from September 1944 until his honorable discharge in October 1945. He returned to Montrose where he worked in various trades including being self employed in construction and installing carpet and linoleum and other floor coverings. He retired after 29 years of working for Montrose Production Credit Association, where he helped ranchers and farmers of the area finance their operations with loans he arranged. Eleven years, from 1963 until 1974, he was branch manager in the Durango office. He spent several years as an Elder in both Durango Christian Church and Montrose Christian Church. Wayne was known for his firm handshake and friendly smile.
A memorial service, in celebration of Wayne’s life, will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 12, 2011, at the Christ’s Church of the Valley in Montrose. Interment will follow the service at Valley Lawns, south of Montrose. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to Northern Colorado Hospice, Greeley, Colo., or Ozark Christian College, 1111 North Main St., Joplin, Mo.
