Jimmie S. Wilson January 13, 1928 – March 7, 2012
Jim Wilson was born to Josephine and Ford Wilson in Mesquite, NM on January 13, 1928. He and his brother Joe were the only children. Jim went school in the Chama, New Mexico area and the family moved to the Montrose area in the Riverside community, south of town. Jim joined the Navy and spent his time on a ship learning the food service trade. After his time in the Navy, he returned to the Montrose area and was employed at a small locally owned market as a butcher. He married Idress (Ayers) shortly after his return. Jim worked at the old Burtis Brothers packing company on West Main Street then ran the old Texaco station across the street. Jim and Idress had one son together Bob Wilson. Jim adopted Idress’s son Curtis. The family moved back to the Riverside community for a time, then spent three years in Idaho and Utah with Jim working in the meat packing industry. The family then moved back to Montrose to the Riverside family farm in the mid 1950’s. Jim changed his career path and became a successful insurance salesman in the Montrose area. In the mid 1960’s he and LaMoine Brown went into business together in the credit and collection business. After years of success, he left to begin his retirement. He was never one to completely retire so he starting selling real estate in the local area. In 1978, Jim was stricken with a spinal virus that permanently paralyzed him below his waist. He was not expected to survive that illness. But through his sheer determination and courage, he fought back and was able to enjoy his life by doing as much as he could and even more that anyone expected. When he finally completely retired, he would drive himself to the swimming pool 4-5 times a week. Jim could also often be seen having lunch at the Pavilion Senior Center. Jim’s health began to deteriorate in the last 2 years. He recently suffered some medical issues that seemed to slow him down even more. He passed in his sleep, at his longtime home and in his own bed. This is what he always wanted.
