Shirley Jean (Beers) Walters, age 83, of Montrose, passed away Dec. 13, 2011 at the Homestead at Montrose. Shirley was born Dec. 25, 1927 in Franklin, PA. An only child, she was preceded in death by her parents, Sid and Mildred Beers. Shirley graduated from Franklin High School with honors, in the class of 1945 and from Indiana State Teacher’s College, Indiana, PA. in 1949. She taught commercial subjects in Pennsylvania and Ohio schools in her early years. In 1952 she married James Morris ‘Moe’ Walters in Fremont, OH. and helped her husband in their business. In 1957, Moe and Shirley moved to Montrose where they established Moe-Jean & Son Boiler and Welding Shop. Shirley was also a Teacher’s Aide at Morgan School for ten years. Moe passed away on Dec. 26, 1998 in Montrose.
Shirley was a member of the Montrose Church of the Nazarene. She had been honored as Colorado Nazarene Sunday School Teacher of the year and served in different areas of the church. In earlier years she had helped to organize the Western Slope Ladies Retreat for Nazarene Ladies and later, with her dear friend, Dorothy Sumner had organized the All Women’s Spring Renewal, a weekend retreat. God and church were important in Shirley’s life.
Surviving family members include her children, Kevin (Kathy) Walters of Montrose; grandchildren, Michelle Walters of Montrose; Jeremy (Jessica) Walters of Delta, CO; CPT. Angela Walters of Ramstein, Germany; great-granddaughter, Faith Victoria Walters; cousin Betty Weaver of Oil City, PA.
A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, Dec. 16, 2011 at 2:00 pm at Montrose First Church of the Nazarene on 12th Street with a visitation prior to the service on Friday from 1:00 to 1:30 pm at the church. Burial will follow the service at Valley Lawn Cemetery, south of Montrose.
