Norma Jane Vold

Feb. 10, 1931 — May 5, 2011

MONTROSE — Norma Jane Vold died on Thursday, May 5, 2011 in her Montrose home of almost 50 years. Norma was born in Platte, S. D. on Feb. 10, 1931 to Marie (VanderVoort) and Ryan Pranger. She graduated from Platte High School in 1949. She married Robert Vold on March 14, 1952 in a small wedding in Kentucky, arranged because of Bob’s army leave. It was just before he was deployed to Korea. They lived in Sioux Falls and in Vermillion, S.D., where Bob graduated from the University of South Dakota in 1958.  They moved to Denver and then settled in Montrose, Colo. in 1962.

Norma was always very active in Zion Lutheran Church. She served in the Mary-Martha Guild and was part of the Naomi Circle. She attended bible studies, worked church rummage sales, and participated in countless projects. She directed the church choir from 1963 to 1992, and occasionally sang solos. In 1992, she spent the year with Bob in Papua New Guinea at the Martin Luther Seminary in Lau. Most recently she started a Wednesday widow’s group.  Norma worked elections, was a member of the Valley Symphony Orchestra board, and served for a time on the Montrose City Planning Commission. She liked to read, to garden, to dress up, and to entertain in her home. She also enjoyed extensive travels with Bob across the United States and Canada, with occasional trips to London and the European Continent.  She regularly returned to Platte to visit family and friends and always received the most recent edition of the Platte Enterprise. On her 80th birthday, she flew to Georgia for the wedding of her granddaughter, Lindsey.

Norma was preceded in death by her father when she was 8, her mother, her husband, Robert in 2007, and her sister, Gerry Ringling. She is survived by her sister, Lois Adams of Puyallup, Wash.; three children and families, Doug and Linda Vold of Medford, Ore., Sandy Vold and Craig Van Riper of Seattle, Wash., and David and Jennifer Vold of Senoia, Ga.; grandchildren, Lexi Vold, her housemate and companion for over a year, Reuben and Alysha Vold; great-granddaughter, Louise Jane, of Missoula, Mont., Damon and Veronica Vold of Eugene, Ore., Taylor Vold of Jacksonville, Fla., and Lindsey and Devon Kearce of Haralson, Ga. In recent years, Norma suffered through several different bouts of cancer.  Helping to sustain her were her feisty spirit, her faith in God, and her many friends.  Memorials in Norma’s name may be given to Zion Lutheran Church, 701 S. Junction Ave., Montrose, CO 81401. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 10, 2011, at Zion Lutheran Church with Pastor Michael Rime officiating.
