Arland Charles Thieking October 10, 1919 - September 3, 2011
Arland Charles Thieking, age 91, of Montrose, Colo., passed away Sept. 3, 2011 at his residence, Sunrise Creek Assisted Living. Arland was born Oct. 10. 1919, in Waverly, Iowa. He spent his childhood on the family farm and graduated from Waverly High School in Waverly, Iowa. He went on to college and attended the University of Northern Iowa, in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Arland enlisted and served his country in the United States Marine Corps. serving during WWII in the South Pacific. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to Iowa and married his wife, Virginia, on June 18, 1947 in Plainfield, Iowa, and spent 64 years together. They resided in Iowa, until 1958, when they moved to Colorado where they made their home until Arland’s time of death. He was a businessman, and owner/operator of Highlander Center Laundry, and KOA Campground in Montrose. Arland assisted in the building of Morrow Point Dam, and a favorite past time throughout his life was carpentry work.
Arland and Virginia are members of the First Baptist Church, in Montrose, and Arland was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Montrose, for many years.
Surviving family members include his wife, Virginia at Sunrise Creek, in Montrose; son, Bruce H. (Jodi) Thieking of Montrose; daughters, Rebecca J. (Rex) Reed of Holladay, Utah, and Paula M. (Tim) Kelly of Highlands Ranch, Colo; brother, Wayne Thieking of Loveland, Colo; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Arland was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard and Gladys Thieking, and a sister, Phyllis.
A Memorial Service in celebration of Arland’s life will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2011 at 11:00 am at the First Baptist Church on S. Townsend, in Montrose, with Pastor Ron Holz officiating. The service will conclude at the Church. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church, in memory of Arland Thieking, 222 S. Townsend, Montrose, Co., 81401. Arrangements are under the direction of Crippin Funeral Home & Crematory, Montrose, Colo.
