Billie Mae McCormick Salter April 4, 1952 ~ Oct. 7, 2011
Billie Mae McCormick, was born in Monte Vista, Colorado, on April 4, 1952 to Edna Ruth Vanaken McCormick and William Gordon McCormick. She lived in Center, Colorado until her father passed away in 1956. Edna moved Billie and her sisters Diana and Carrie from the farm in Center to Creede, Colorado. The family lived in Creede for 3 years until Edna remarried and moved to Durango, Colorado. Billie was joined in the family with two more brothers, Grant and Don Washburn.
Billie introduced her most precious gift, her daughter Jamie Lee, into the world in Montrose, Colorado, in 1971. Billie lived in Montrose, Colorado, Denver, Colorado, and then moved to the Dallas, Texas area in 1982, where she lived for the remainder of her life. Billie was the owner of Uncle Herman’s, a nightclub in Mesquite, Texas, for 20 years. She was an accomplished business woman, who used her resources to put her daughter through college and provide for several charities in the Dallas, area. She adopted a homeless shelter in Dallas. She made sure the kids in the shelter had Christmas presents and Easter baskets and that those travelers who were left away from home on holidays had a Christmas and Thanksgiving dinner to come to at Uncle Herman’s. She was hard to reach at those times because she was so generous. Billie was married to Woodrow Salter in 1984 and resided with him in Heath, Texas for 10 years. They remained good friends. Billie was a strong willed woman who fought for those who needed someone to care. During the last few years of her life, she worked at the Ermine group home for the developmentally disabled in Greenville, Texas. She was indeed a champion for the most vulnerable people on earth, the developmentally disabled. She had iron will and passionate fortitude that was undeniable for the causes she cherished. Billie made a yearly trip to Colorado, where she loved to fish at Blue Mesa and Silverjack Reservoirs as well as peaceful moments at her sister Diane’s country home It was the highlight of the year for relatives in Colorado when Aunt Billie came to visit, and she expected to see them all at Blue Mesa Lake when she came! She also loved to go with her sister Carrie to Louisiana where she was an avid winner of the slots in Shreveport. She loved fishing on the beautiful beaches of Gulf Shores, Alabama.
Billie is survived by her daughter, Jamie Lee Meyer of Ft. Collins, Colorado, grandson Brock Morgan Meyer, two sisters, Diana Curtis of Olathe, Colorado, Carrie McCormick of Delta, Colorado and two brothers Grant Washburn of Olathe and Don Washburn of Grand Junction, Colorado. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and grand nieces and nephews. She is survived by her Love and Companion, Rock Ellington. She and Rock shared their own piece of heaven in their house on Lake Lavon in Farmersville, Texas. Billie treasured walking with her dog Katie around the lake, her garden, flowers, and her friends the red birds, Petunia the Possum. Phyllis Dilla and Speedy the Squirrel. A visitation for family and friends is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 14, 2011, from 3:30 to 6:00pm at Crippin chapel. A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, Oct. 15, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at Crippin Funeral Home Chapel. Billie will be laid to rest in the cemetery next to her mother Edna in Olathe Cemetery in Olathe, Colorado.
