Jim Antone Ring

Aug. 26, 1934 — May 31, 2011

MONTROSE — Jim Antone Ring, loving husband, devoted companion, faithful friend of his wife Marian, passed away on Tuesday, May 31, 2011, at 11:10 a.m., at Hospice & Palliative Care of Western Colorado at the age of 76. Jim is survived by his son, Jim Antone Ring, Jr. who resides in Houston, Texas and Kevin, Taylor, Sean Keelan and Nikki Benton, his wife's grandchildren. His parents, Carl Ring and Hazel Bolin Ring are deceased. Jim graduated from Newton High School in Elmhurst, N.Y. in June 1952 and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from Wake Forest, N.C. in 1958. He served in the Air Force for two years.

Jim was born on Aug. 26, 1934 in Fort Worth, Texas. Although he lived most of his earlier years in Texas, his father's job brought Jim to New York City and Chicago. During his work career, Jim worked in sales and had his own import and export business. Jim thrived at turning companies with a red ink bottom line to  profitable and successful businesses. He served as Executive Vice President for a Title Company in Texas in 1985. Shortly thereafter, he retired. He met Marian in 1977 in New York City on his way back to Texas and they have been together for 34 years. The couple lived in Texas for 18 years and moved to Montrose, Colo. in October 1997.

Jim was straight forward, always with a ready smile and a philosophy of looking for a person's true character by his actions and not by his spoken word. He always said you know a person's true substance by what they do, not by what they say. He lived his life that way and people were naturally drawn to him by his honest and pleasant personality.

His favorite hobbies were fishing, skiing, lapidary, bird watching and coin collecting. He was an expert on the stock market and an avid reader with broad interests in history, philosophy and astronomy, always aspiring to expand his depth of knowledge. His love for lapidary led to opening a store with several friends on Main Street, where they made jewelry from precious stones.

He didn't believe in complaining and if you were to ask Jim how he felt, even in his last days, he would say "fine." He was always appreciative of anything anyone did for him and "thank you" were his favorite words. Jim had many friends throughout his lifetime. They respected him for his values and always had a kind word for him. One friend remarked that Jim was a "class act." He was, one in a million. Although he will be deeply missed, he has left all of us with precious memories that will remain forever in our hearts.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Hospice & Palliative Care of Western Colorado, in loving memory of Jim Ring, P.O. Box 1804, Montrose, CO 81402.
