Naomi V. (Giese) Kalotta

Feb. 12, 1922 — Sept. 27, 2011

Naomi V. Kalotta, age 89, a resident of Montrose since 1981, died Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 27, 2011 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction after a brief illness.

Naomi was born Feb. 12, 1922 to John and Martha (Altmann) Giese in Mitchell, Neb. She spent her childhood in Mitchell and graduated from Mitchell High School in 1940. During World War II, Naomi moved to Detroit, Mich. and worked as a riveter helping to build B-26 Marauder airplanes for the army. She was a “Rosie the Riveter” in the truest sense of the word and took great pride in the fact that she was “working for victory” in the war effort.

In 1950, she married the love of her life, Alex Kalotta.  Alex preceded her in death in 1974. One daughter, Carleen, was born from this marriage.

In 1981, Naomi decided to head back out west to the part of the country that she loved and moved to Montrose where she lived until the time of her death. She was employed by the Montrose Library district for a number of years. A good book was her window to the world, whether it was just an enjoyable story or a way to learn more about her favorite subjects of archeology, paleontology and geology.   Her love of music also enriched her life, whether listening to a favorite opera or playing the piano. She had a great sense of humor, a quick wit, and she was never bashful about offering her opinions to all.

Naomi is survived by one daughter, Carleen (Glenn) Ogg of Montrose; one step-grandson, Chad; one sister, Marilyn Stoddard of Kerrville, Texas and numerous loving nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Alfred, Norman and Lyle Giese.

At Naomi’s request, cremation has taken place and no services are planned.  Cremains will be both scattered high in the San Juan mountains and interred in White Chapel Memorial Cemetery in Troy, Mich. next to Alex. Arrangements are being handled under the direction of the Crippin Funeral Home of Montrose.  Memorial contributions can be made to the Montrose Library District, 320 South 2nd St., Montrose, CO 81401 or the Montrose Animal Protection Agency, P.O. Box 2009, Montrose, CO 81402.  Condolences may also be sent to the family at www.crippinfuneralhome.com. Arrangements are under the direction of Crippin Funeral Home, 802 E. Main St., Montrose, CO 81401 (970) 249-2121.
