William H. Jefferson

MONTROSE — William H. Jefferson, age 81, of Montrose, Colo., passed away Monday, Oct. 18, 2010, at his home. William was born Feb. 5, 1929 in Macomb, Ill. to Herman Wayne and Grace Violet (Gustafson) Jefferson. He graduated from Quincy High School in Illinois. William went on to college at Long Beach State University in Long Beach, Calif. He married his wife, Sandra, Jan. 14, 1956 in Hannibal, Mo. and she survives.
William served his country in the Marine Corps during WWII and the Korean War, spending a total of four years as a Radar Operator/Navigator. He was previously a resident of Tucson, Ariz., Chicago, Ill. and Ridgway, Colo. prior to moving to Montrose, Colo. where William and Sandra made their home until William’s time of death. Prior to William’s retirement, he was a Systems Engineer Manager for 34 years for I.B.M. He was a member of the Ouray Elk’s Lodge for 23 years. William loved to read and was a big Rockies baseball fan.
Surviving family members include his wife, Sandra, of the family home in Montrose; son, Terry L. Jefferson of Montrose; daughter, Debra L. Wells of West Palm Beach, Fla.; a brother, Charles Jefferson and wife, Kathy of Williamsburg, Va.; sisters, Ann McDonald of Quincy, Ill., Sandra Wascher of Casa Grande, Ariz., Pamela Ruzicka of Mooresville, N.C.; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. William was preceded in death by his son, Michael S. Jefferson; parents, Herman and Grace Jefferson Balzer; sister, Joyce Harman; and brother, Jack Jefferson.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 22, 2010, at Crippin Funeral Home Chapel. Private family inurnment was held prior to the service at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Ouray.
