Roberta M. 'Margaret Ann' Hammit

Jan. 15, 1930 — June 4, 2011

 

MONTROSE — Margaret Ann Hammit, age 81, of Montrose, passed away Saturday, June 4, 2011 at The Homestead in Montrose. Margaret was born Jan. 15, 1930 to Robert and Gladys (Schiller) Jackson in Denver, Colo. At the age of 2, Margaret and her family moved to Montrose where she graduated from Montrose High School. She went to college at Western State in Gunnison, then attended Barnes Business College in Denver, Colo. Margaret returned to Montrose and worked as a bookkeeper for Hartman Brothers. While working at Hartman’s, she met Harold Curtis Hammit, who worked for the Bureau of Land Management. They were married March 15, 1952 in Montrose. Following the birth of their two children, Kent and Kim, the family moved to Canyon City, Colo. From there, they moved to Durango, Colo., Reno, Nev., Sacramento, Calif., then to Washington D.C. Following Harold’s retirement from BLM, they returned to Montrose and made their home. Harold preceded Margaret in death on June 14, 1988 in Montrose. Margaret continued to live at the family home until 2002, then moved to The Homestead at Montrose until her time of death.

Surviving family members include her son, Kent Hammit of Hollywood, Fla.; daughter, Kim Passas of Shamong, N.J.; a brother, Robert Jackson and sister, Betty Frasier, both of Montrose; three grandchildren, Jaimee Davis, Stacey and Nicholas Passas. Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, husband and one sister, Esther.

A visitation for family and friends was held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, June 9, 2011, at Crippin Funeral Home Chapel. A graveside interment service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 10, 2011 at Grand View Cemetery, west of Montrose.  Arrangements are under the direction of Crippin Funeral Home, 802 E.
