Edward J. Chavez, age 82, of Montrose, went to be with his Heavenly Father on Friday, Mar. 23, 2012, at the Summit Rehabilitation and San Juan Living Center in Montrose, just three days after his 82nd birthday.   Edward was born Mar. 20, 1930 to Fidel and Amelia

(Archuleta) Chavez in Cortez, Co.  He spent his childhood in Mancos, Co.  He married his wife Olivia, and they were later divorced but still remained as family.  She preceded him in death.  The family had also resided in Cortez and Telluride, Co., where Edward worked on the railroad, Uranium mines, hard rock mines and the saw mills in southern Colorado.  The family moved to Telluride in 1969 and worked in the Idarado Mine until 1978.  He then relocated to Montrose, where he made his home until his time of death.   At an early age, he enjoyed playing his guitar and had a small band; playing for weddings, marches and dances.  Edward was quite the pool shark, a sport he always enjoyed, and he enjoyed his occasional gambling and to watch boxing.  He loved the outdoors, going hunting and fishing before he was unable to go.  He loved spending time with family.

Edward is survived by his companion, Anita Martinez of Montrose; his sons Edward (Pam) Chavez of Montrose, Harold (Tereasa) Chavez of Cedaredge, Co; daughters Cindy Anstine and fiance Rockye, of Montrose, Debbie (Rick) Maestas of Montrose; 11 grandchildren, Tammy (Daniel) Czepiel of Montrose, Patrick (Kimery) Anstine of Montrose, Mike (Lisa) Maestas of Clifton, Co., Tina (Matt) Suppes of Montrose, Shiela (Travis) Gray of Grand Junction, Co., Tiffany (Andrew Brunk) of Clifton, Co., Donald (Rebecca) Chavez of Cedaredge, Co., Nikki (Spark Richardson) of Cedaredge, Co., Danette (Ray) Freudenberg of Tuscon, Az., Tonia Tyner of Montrose, Nona Paxton and Santiago Gonzales of Westminster, Co; 27 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Edward was preceded in death by his parents Fidel and Amelia Chavez, three brothers Abe, Sam and Joe Chavez, and one sister Bertha Valdez.

A Memorial Service in celebration of Edward’s life will be held on Friday, Mar. 30, 2012 at 2:00 pm at Crippin Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Paul Nystrom officiating.  The service will conclude at the chapel.  Family and friends are welcome to a Graveside Service on Saturday, Mar. 31, 2012 at 2:00 PM in Mancos Cemetery in Mancos, Co.  Arrangements are under the direction of Crippin Funeral Home & Crematory, Montrose, Co.
