William H. “Bill” Boyd

February 13, 1917 ~ June 13, 2012


William H. “Bill” Boyd, age 95, of Montrose and a longtime resident of Colorado, passed away June 13, 2012 at his home.  Bill was born Feb. 13, 1917 to Thomas W. and Laura (Miller) Boyd in Lenora, Ok.  He spent his childhood in Lenora, until his family moved to Delta, Co. in 1933.  He married Virgina Olive Meyers from Padroni, Co., on July 27, 1943, and family members, Sadie and M.L. Burnner as witnesses.  Ginny preceded Bill in death on May 14, 1995 in Montrose.

Bill served his country in the United States Army from Oct. 1943 until his honorable discharge in Nov. 1945 as a machine gunner in the 51st Field Artillery in New Guinea and the Philippines.  Throughout his life he worked at various jobs for the Montrose Water Users Association, as ditch rider, operating the drag-line and other heavy equipment, from 1952 to 1981, when he retired. Bill had also worked on the Gunnison tunnel during its building stages.  He enjoyed spending his spare time hunting with his favorite hounds and breaking horses. 
Bill was a wonderful person who was trusted, respected and honored by his family and friends.  He enjoyed Bird Watching, wrestling and the outdoors.   Bill enjoyed spending time with family and being grandpa.  Many will miss his quiet, caring, giving and his kind nature.

Surviving family members include his daughter, Marilyn Mae Boyd of Montrose; son Garry (Cheryl) Boyd of Medvale, Ut; one sister Ruby Nichols of Delta, Co; 13 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.  Bill was preceded in death by his parents, wife Virginia “Ginny” Boyd,  three sisters, Clara, Sadie and Lucille, daughters Carolyn Kay Bellah and Dottie Darlene Boyd, one son, Rex Lynn Boyd and one grandson, William “Billy” Henry Kitsmiller.

A Graveside Service with Military Honors and flag presentation will be held on Thursday, June 21, 2012 at 2:00 pm at Delta Municipal Cemetery.  Arrangements are under the direction of Crippin Funeral Home & Crematory, Montrose, Co.
