MONTROSE — Gladys Anna Bettenhausen, age 93, of Montrose, Colo., passed away Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2010, at the Homestead Assisted Living in Montrose. Gladys was born Oct. 12, 1917 to Otto and Anna (Etmund) Wissel in Roca, Neb. She was the youngest of 10 siblings. She spent her childhood and graduated high school in Hickman, Neb. Gladys married Elden Bettenhausen on Jan. 2, 1941 in Hickman. He preceded her in death on April 18, 1995 in Montrose. Gladys and Elden moved from Hickman in January 1941 to Montrose, where they made their home until their time of death. Gladys enjoyed spending time with her family. Her grandchildren were very special to her. She enjoyed gardening and then canning her fruits and vegetables. Gladys loved sewing and embroidery. In later years, Elden and Gladys would go camping, fishing and spend time outdoors.
Surviving family members include her children, Janis Stryker of Montrose, Dennis (Marilyn) Bettenhausen of Columbia, Mo., Cathy (Russell) Cronenberg of Montrose; eight grandchildren: Terri (Phil) Motley of Montrose, Karma (Henry) Ansbacher of Denver, Scott (Kristi) Stryker of Montrose, Chris (Susan) Stryker of Centennial, Kelly Cronenberg of Delta, Heather McBride of Grand Junction, David (Jessica) Bettenhausen of Kansas City, Mo. and Laura Bettenhausen of St. Louis, Mo.; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Gladys was preceded in death by her parents, husband and nine brothers and sisters. A funeral service in celebration of Gladys’ life will be held at 10 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 28, 2010, at Crippin Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Paul Nystrom officiating. The service will conclude at the chapel. A private family interment will be held at Valley Lawn Cemetery in Montrose.
