Walter L. Adamson

March 9, 1937 — July 5, 2011

 

MONTROSE — Walter L. Adamson passed away July 5, 2011 at his home in Montrose.  He was born the second of five children on March 9, 1937 to Mae and Alfred Adamson at the family home in Saguache, Colo.  He attended and graduated from public school in Saguache and then joined the US Navy. While stationed in San Francisco, he met, fell in love and married Irene Sweo. From this marriage there were three children, Annette Adamson Agnes, Cathy Adamson Jezek and Michael Adamson. 

During his career in the Navy, Walter had many assignments including two tours of duty in support of “Operation Deep Freeze,” which provided support to the scientific study of Antarctica. He received many military awards with the most significant being a medal for his service in Vietnam, the Navy Expeditions Service Medal, the Unit Commendation Medal, the Navy Achievement Medal and the Fourth Award of the Navy Good Conduct Medal. Walter loved his country and served proudly for 20 years before retiring as a Chief Petty Officer.

In 1975, Walter and the family moved to Montrose, Colo. where he went to work for the Bureau of Reclamation. He worked on various projects including the building of Crystal Dam and the Dallas Creek Project (Ridgway Dam) until his retirement in July 1987.

Walter grew up hunting and fishing in the Saguache area, a love that he had all of his life.  He was happiest with a fishing pole, a rifle, and his friends and family in the great outdoors.  He was a past member of the Montrose Bass Club and the Montrose Elks. 

He is survived by his wife, Irene of 48 years; daughters, Annette (Kevin) Agnes of Colorado Springs, Colo. and Cathy (Jim) Jezek of Athens, Texas. He was blessed with four grandchildren: Jon Lieber of Denver, Colo. and Katie Lieber of Colorado Springs, Colo., Seth Jezek of Alliance, Neb. and Haley Jezek of Athens, Texas, as well as one great- granddaughter, Lorelai of Colorado Springs, Colo. Also surviving is his brother, Louis (Betty) of Salida, Colo.; and sister, Connie (Vic) Bantang of Dinuba, Calif. and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Walter was preceded in death by his son, Michael; parents, Alfred and Mae; brother, Francis; and sister, Janice. At Walter’s request, there will be no memorial service. The family requests contributions be made to American Heart Association 1280 South Parker Rd., Denver, Co 80231 or to the charity of your choice.
